This is a three-year fixed-term position as part of the third-party funded (DFG) project, “ConspiRacism: Untangling the Knot Between Population Replacement Conspiracy Theories and Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Class.” This research project aims to empirically examine the history, intellectual origins, political mobilization, and digital dissemination of conspiracy theories that claim the replacement of the European population by Muslims and migrants in Germany and France. It will explore the complex conceptual and historical connections between population replacement conspiracy theories and racism, as well as how gender, sexuality, and class intersect and are utilized in shaping these narratives. The selected doctoral candidate is expected to develop and pursue a doctoral research project focused on the emergence and articulation of the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory in France. Subject to the release of funds, the position is expected to be filled on April 1st, 2025.
Responsibilities | Your tasks:
- Conducting your own research project on the French case study amounting to 70% of the working time for your own qualification as part of your doctorate.
- Supporting the research activities of the project leader at the European University Viadrina as well as the overall organization, public relations, and transfer activities of the project.
- Participation in the activities of the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION.
Requirements
Qualifications | Your qualifications profile:
- MA degree in social sciences (sociology, anthropology, gender studies, cultural studies) completed with above-average grades, to be proven upon taking up the position
- In-depth knowledge of qualitative methods in the cultural and social sciences, specifically discourse analysis
- Experience with independent empirical research in the social sciences
- Language skills: English (C2) and French (C1), German language skills are desirable
- Strong interest in and academic knowledge of conspiracy theories about the "great replacement", racism and gender studies, preferably with a focus on France
- Willingness to familiarize yourself with data analysis and data management software
- High level of initiative and determination, analytical thinking, teamwork and communication skills as well as the ability to carry out scientific work independently.
