The Department of Information Services and Computing aims to ensure an excellent state-of-the-art research data management for outstanding research in all Helmholtz research fields as well as a seamless integration of comprehensible workflows to document the entire life cycle of research projects or the publication of software projects in a Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable way.

In collaboration with colleagues and different national and international partners you will support the development in our ongoing research projects. You have the opportunity to contribute to flagship projects such as HELIPORT, mTeSS-X and HERMES/Software CaRD and implement them with the respective partners in a sustainable manner.

The Group of Data Management and HPC is looking for a Scientific Employee (f/m/d) Research Software Engineer (RSE) for Data Management.

Tasks

  • Supporting our team in third-party funded projects such as Semantic x-Lab, mTeSS-X and Software CaRD
  • Identifying and discussing the requirements of our communities and their integration and prioritisation within project scheduling in collaboration with our partners
  • Design and further development of webservices such as PaN-Training and HELIPORT
  • Establishing a workflow for research software as part of the Software CaRD project, which includes curation steps to ensure that the overall product is discoverable, understandable, citable and reusable
  • Provision of a platform (mTeSS-X) for training materials to enable scientists from all disciplines to implement and maintain modern scientific principles including, data and software publications

Requirements

  • Completed university studies (Master/Diploma) in the field of Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or related field with a strong connection to the topic
  • Solid experience in sustainable software engineering with modern tools (e. g. Git, CI/CD, container technologies, build tools)
  • Basic knowledge on metadata standards and protocols for metadata exchange
  • Prior knowledge in semantic web technologies, resource description framework (RDF), ontologies, persistent identifiers, and usage of graph databases and query languages
  • Passion and enthusiasm for topics in software engineering and web development for open science, such as sustainable software development, open source, data and software publications, computational workflows, etc.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convey knowledge
  • The work in a Helmholtz-wide distributed, collaborative team requires you to be a motivated, open, initiative taking and creative team player
  • Profound knowledge of a programming language, preferrably Python
  • Experience with web frameworks such as Django, Flask, Ruby on Rails
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both verbally and written
