Research Associate (m/f/x)

At the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Institute of Solid Mechanics, the Chair of Dynamics and Mechanism Design offers a position as

Research Associate (m/f/x)
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting January 1, 2025. The position is initially limited to three years (until December 31, 2027). The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (usually PhD).

Tasks

To work on a research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the field of textile technology. The highly dynamic warp knitting process is to be better researched; one contribution to this is the analysis and modeling of short-term dynamic manufacturing processes.
The particular challenge is the localization and compensation of the varying yarn tensile forces, which are caused by edge and hysteresis effects, spatial yarn vibrations and resonance peaks of the yarn guide elements.
Objectives:

  • Detection of the complex interactions depending on the machine parameters, the respective position of the warp threads and the knitted fabric weave
  • Modeling the threads as beam elements in a multi-body dynamic environment
  • Avoidance or reduction of high yarn tension peaks in the warp knitting process and thus the expansion of the processable yarn material
  • Realization of higher production speeds for low-stretch yarns than before and thus higher inertia forces and influences of yarn dynamics in order to exploit the performance potential of warp knitting technology
  • Experimental and model-based analysis of the warp yarn sheet at drive speed increases above 4,400 rpm
    The project is being implemented in close cooperation with the Institute of Textile Technology at TU Dresden, where a doctoral student is also working on the project.
    The tasks also include the supervision of student project-related theses, project documentation in accordance with the requirements of the project partners and project sponsors and the creation of scientific publications and presentations.

Requirements

  • university degree (Diploma/Master) in either mechatronic engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or mathematics with technical focus or related fields;
  • advanced knowledge in technical mechanics, system dynamics and control theory as well as in modeling and simulation methods
  • previous knowledge in the simulation of multi-body systems is advantageous but not mandatory
  • furthermore, programming experience in MATLAB/Simulink and good written and spoken German or English
