Hum­boldt-Uni­ver­si­tät zu Ber­lin - Exzel­lenz­clus­ter Mat­ters of Activity/The Depart­ment of Bio­ma­te­ri­als, Max Planck Insti­tute of Col­lo­ids and Inter­faces (MPI-CI) in Pots­dam (Golm), Ger­many

Der Clus­ter Mat­ters of Activity hat das Ziel, Grund­la­gen für eine neue Kul­tur des Mate­ria­len zu schaf­fen. Die zen­trale Vision des Pro­jekts ist es, Bil­der, Räume und Mate­ria­lien als aktive Bau­for­men einer neuen sym­bo­li­schen und phy­si­schen Rea­li­tät zu ent­wi­ckeln, in der sich Natur und Kul­tur in neu­ar­ti­ger Weise ver­schrän­ken. In die­sem Zusam­men­hang ist die inter­dis­zi­pli­näre Erfor­schung und Ent­wick­lung von nach­hal­ti­gen Pro­zes­sen und Struk­tu­ren ein zen­tra­les Anlie­gen in allen Berei­chen visu­ell-mate­ria­ler Prä­gung wie Weara­bles, Werk­stoff­tech­nik, Medi­zin­tech­nik, Logis­tik, Archi­tek­tur und Robo­tik. Mehr als 40 Dis­zi­pli­nen unter­su­chen sys­te­ma­tisch Design­stra­te­gien für Mate­ria­lien und Struk­tu­ren, die sich spe­zi­fi­schen Anfor­de­run­gen und Umge­bun­gen anpas­sen. Der Clus­ter setzt auf eine neue Rolle von Ges­tal­tung, die sich vor dem Hin­ter­grund eines wach­sen­den Reich­tums und der ste­ti­gen Wei­ter­ent­wick­lung von Mate­ria­lien und Visua­li­sie­rungs­for­men in allen Dis­zi­pli­nen abzeich­net.

PhD Stu­dent in Civil Engi­nee­ring and/ or Archi­tec­tu­ral Design »Mate­rial Form Func­tion« (m/f/d)

Employ­ment at Max Planck Insti­tute for Col­lo­ids and Inter­faces wit­hin the frame­work of the Clus­ter of Excel­lence Mat­ters of Activity (Mate­rial Form Func­tion)


The accep­ted can­di­date will join the Max Planck Insti­tute of Col­lo­ids and Inter­faces in the Bio­ma­te­rial Depart­ment led by Pro­fes­sor Dr.h.c. Peter Fratzl with co-super­vi­sion by Pro­fes­sor Dr.-Ing. Karola Die­richs and Dr. Michaela Eder.

The MPI-CI com­bi­nes sci­en­ti­fic excel­lence with excep­tio­nal com­mit­ment in the super­vi­sion and sup­port of young rese­ar­chers. The posi­tion will be part of the Clus­ter of Excel­lence »Mat­ters of Activity« ( in the pro­ject »Mate­rial Form Func­tion« to inves­ti­gate bio­mime­tic sup­port struc­tures made of bio­ge­nic mate­ri­als which are embed­ded in local eco­sys­tems, such as forests. These inves­ti­ga­ti­ons will be car­ried out using ana­lo­gue expe­ri­ments and models as well as digi­tal simu­la­ti­ons, such as the finite ele­ment method or the dis­crete ele­ment method, and will be clo­sely lin­ked to com­pu­ta­tio­nal design methods. Expe­ri­ence in the design and imple­men­ta­tion of full-scale archi­tec­tu­ral pro­to­ty­pes is desi­ra­ble. The work is car­ried out in close coope­ra­tion with an inter­di­sci­pli­nary team of mate­rial sci­en­tists, desi­gners and cul­tu­ral sci­en­tists.

  • Com­ple­ted aca­de­mic edu­ca­tion in civil engi­nee­ring or archi­tec­ture
  • Expe­ri­en­ces in com­pu­ta­tio­nal struc­tu­ral ana­ly­sis
  • Fur­ther qua­li­fi­ca­tion in com­pu­ta­tio­nal design and pro­to­ty­p­ing
  • Lan­guage skills in Eng­lish in speech and wri­ting
