Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty VI - Institute of Civil Engineering

Technische Universität Berlin offers an open position:

Research Assistant - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

part-time employment may be possible

Working field:

The multiple reuse of asphalt represents a currently relevant and forward-looking potential for
improved resource conservation and sustainability in the construction industry. In order to deepen the knowledge in this field, the TU Berlin is conducting the DFG project "Postcarbone Road - The Endless Reuse Cycle of Asphalt" together with the Chair of Transport Infrastructure Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. The aim of the project is to investigate the effects of multiple reuses of asphalt with the addition of specially modified rejuvenators and to identify solutions for eliminating or shifting the limits of endless reuse of asphalt. To this end, interdisciplinary work is to be carried out to plan, implement and analyse extensive investigations in the field of bitumen chemistry and the interaction of bitumen and fillers or aggregates. The following analysis methods will be used for bitumen, rejuvenators and mineral fillers and aggregates: FTIR spectroscopy, asphaltene separation, solid phase extraction (SPE), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), low-vac scanning electron microscopy (SEM); adhesion analyses, laser granulometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and mercury pressure porosimetry (MIP). The results are to be analysed holistically using statistical methods and published in reports and publications.

Requirements:

Successfully completed scientific university degree (Diploma, Master's or equivalent) in materials science, chemistry, geosciences, civil engineering or related disciplines with specialisation in construction materials/construction chemistry or asphalt; in-depth knowledge in the field of construction materials and construction chemical additives or bituminous construction materials is a prerequisite; Experience in the field of the abovementioned analytical methods as well as experience with the recycling of asphalt is advantageous; good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills; high motivation and ability to work independently; willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team; experience in writing scientific papers is desirable. When applying, existing experience in the field of the advertised topic and the analytical methods used to date must be stated.
