Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty IV - Institute of Telecommunication Systems / Distributed and Operating Systems (DOS)

Research Assistant - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

part-time employment may be possible

Working field:

The Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) conducts research on the foundations of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cooperation with national and international institutions. This includes investigating methods for the management and processing of large, distributed data as well as for machine learning.
Within BIFOLD, the Distributed and Operating Systems group of Prof. Odej Kao will develop and evaluate new methods for the scalable, distributed processing of large amounts of data. In particular, we will focus on performance modeling and continuous optimization of data processing systems operating in heterogeneous environments and on varying data. The goal is to capture the key characteristics of constantly changing computing environments and have distributed processing systems adapt appropriately to major changes, so the required quality of service can be provided as far as possible and even in case of failures.
The methods developed are to be validated in the context of relevant open-source software. The results are to be published.

Requirements:

Successfully completed scientific university degree (master, diplom or equivalent) in Computer Science with a focus on parallel and distributed systems, cloud computing, and machine learning. Ideally, the applicant has a good knowledge of scalable data analysis and machine learning as well as an interest in anomaly detection, fault tolerance and system reliability. Experience with systems such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Kubernetes, and Kafka as well as good knowledge of deep learning. In addition, we expect the candidate to be willing to participate in a leading research project at the forefront of the technical innovation, a keen interest in empirically investigating new ideas by building prototypes in the context of relevant open-source software, and the ability to work independently and scientifically.
Other requirements are the ability to work well in a team and an excellent command of German and English; sufficient language proficiency to teach classes in both German and English is expected. Proven experience in research, agile project management, iterative software development, and the administration of clusters are desirable.

How to apply:

Please send your written application with the reference number and the usual documents (CV, list of grades, language certificates) to Technische Universität Berlin, Prof. Odej Kao: odej.kao@tu-berlin.de.
