Research Assistant - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

under the reserve that funds are granted
part-time employment may be possible

The working context is to build the next-generation systems for the Internet of Things, Digital Twins, and Edge Computing, e.g. cars, drones, and robots. The research activities will be carried out within an inspiring group, which has built several components for connected vehicles such as computer vision, robotic control, and networking. Such research activities are being funded by various projects, namely AIoTwin, COSMO, and BIFOLD.

Working field:

The offered positions will be funded by SMARTEDGE, an EU project. Its objective is to enable the dynamic integration of decentralized edge intelligence at runtime while ensuring reliability, security, privacy, and scalability. SMARTEDGE will achieve this by enabling a semantic-based interplay of the edge devices of such systems via a cross-layer toolchain that facilitates the seamless and real-time discoverability and composability of an autonomous intelligence swarm. Hence, an application can be freely built by distributing the processing, data fusion, and control across heterogeneous sensors, devices, and edges with ubiquitous low-latency connectivity.

The main scope of these positions is to develop low-code programming tools by using dynamic graph data to represent data fusion tasks along with semantic stream reasoning algorithms. An opportunity for pursuing a Ph.D. in TU Berlin is given. For further details on the position or SMARTEDGE, please contact the project’s Principle Investigator, Dr. Danh Le Phuoc, danh.lephuoc@tu-berlin.de.

We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated in pursuing challenging scientific ideas and solving difficult engineering problems. The successful candidates need to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or similar subjects
  • Very good programming skills in Java or C++
  • Very good language and writing skills in English; Knowledge of German is an advantage, but not a requirement
  • Publications or demonstrable programming skills/knowledge in one or some of the following areas:
  • RDF/Graph Database
  • (RDF/Semantic) Data Stream Processing
  • (Dynamic) Data structures/ Indexing techniques
  • Query Planning, Compiling, and Optimizing

  • ROS-based tools and algorithms (DDS, SLAM, etc)

Knowledge/experience in the following topics are advantages but are not required:
  • Computer Vision
  • Robotics
  • Internet of Things
  • Semantic Web
  • Machine Learning

What we offer:
  • Starting on 01.01.2023, the position is initially offered for 3 years with the possibility of an extension.
  • Access to powerful computing infrastructure, e.g dedicated GPU servers, a high computing cluster with a hundred servers, an interesting robotic testbed with hundred embedded computing nodes (Nvidia Jetson Xavier, TX2, Nano, and other ARM boards), drones, car models, 3D printers, etc.,
  • Connection to an excellent research network including Berlin Big Data Center, Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data, Fraunhofer FOKUS, etc.
  • Faculty IV offers top research expertise and a stimulating and supportive environment.
  • TU Berlin is a great place for professional growth (e.g. internal and national funding for young researchers).

How to apply:

Please send your complete application mentioning the reference number and including the usual documents like a motivation letter, CV, references, and certificates by email (one single pdf file, max. 5 MB) to sekretariat@ods.tu-berlin.de.
