The mis­sion of the Leib­niz Centre for Agri­cul­tural Land­scape Research (ZALF) as a nation­ally and inter­na­tion­ally act­ive research insti­tute is to deliver solu­tions for an eco­lo­gic­ally, eco­nom­ic­ally and socially sus­tain­able agri­cul­ture – together with soci­ety. ZALF is a mem­ber of the Leib­niz Asso­ci­ation and is loc­ated in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Ber­lin-Lichten­berg). It also main­tains a research sta­tion with fur­ther loc­a­tions in Dede­low and Pau­lin­enaue.

PhD Researcher (f/m/d) on plural val­ues and equity in biod­iversity and eco­sys­tem ser­vices gov­ernance

Sub­ject to final approval by the fund­ing body, we are offer­ing a 65% part time pos­i­tion tem­por­ar­ily lim­ited for 36 month - desired start­ing date April 2023 - at our loc­a­tion in Müncheberg as PhD.

Working field:

The pos­i­tion is part of the work­ing group “Gov­ernance of Eco­sys­tem Ser­vices”. The cent­ral ques­tion of this work­ing group is which gov­ernance approaches allow for the tar­geted and equit­able pro­vi­sion of soci­etally desired eco­sys­tem ser­vices and biod­iversity con­ser­va­tion object­ives.

In the con­text of the Biod­iversa+ pro­ject "Just" con­ser­va­tion? Bridging val­ues for equit­able biod­iversity gov­ernance (Bridging­VAL­UES) we offer a PhD pos­i­tion to ana­lyze mater­ial (fin­ance and tech­nical expert­ise) and imma­ter­ial (dis­courses and know­ledge) flows of EU con­ser­va­tion policies, how they mani­fest in our Ger­man case study Spree­wald Bio­sphere Reserve, and to under­stand how these flow mani­fest­a­tions effect the diversity of place-based biod­iversity and eco­sys­tem ser­vices val­ues and equity (con­text, recog­ni­tion, par­ti­cip­a­tion and dis­tri­bu­tion).

  • con­cep­tu­al­iz­a­tion and devel­op­ment of a research design to ana­lyze impacts of EU con­ser­va­tion policies and related mater­ial and imma­ter­ial flows on local level stake­hold­ers val­ues and social equity
  • imple­ment­a­tion of the research design / empir­ical invest­ig­a­tion at the Ger­man case study Spree­wald Bio­sphere Reserve
  • present­a­tion of research res­ults at national/inter­na­tional con­fer­ences
  • pub­lic­a­tion of res­ults in peer-reviewed sci­entific journ­als
  • col­lab­or­a­tion with other research­ers of the inter­na­tional Bridging­VAL­UES pro­ject con­sor­tium

Requirements:

  • excel­lent com­ple­tion of a Mas­ter (or equi­val­ent) in the field of (eco­lo­gical) eco­nom­ics, con­ser­va­tion policy, nat­ural resource man­age­ment, human geo­graphy, (rural) soci­ology or related sub­jects
  • know­ledge of global and EU con­ser­va­tion policies, the eco­sys­tem ser­vices and nature’s con­tri­bu­tions to people con­cepts, dis­courses on val­ues of biod­iversity and eco­sys­tem ser­vices, envir­on­mental justice and tele­coup­ling are an advant­age
  • empir­ical research exper­i­ence
  • know­ledge of trans­dis­cip­lin­ary and / or multi actor research is an advant­age
  • pro­fi­ciency in both Ger­man and Eng­lish
