PhD pos­i­tion between CIC bio­ma­GUNE and Biod­ono­s­tia in San Sebastián, Spain

Working field:

A joint PhD pos­i­tion between CIC­bio­ma­GUNE and Biod­ono­s­tia is avail­able in San Sebastián, Spain. The research, which will be car­ried out under the super­vi­sion of Dr. Dor­leta Jime­nez de Aber­asturi (CIC bio­ma­GUNE) and Dr. Amaia Cipitria (Biod­ono­s­tia), revolves around the fab­ric­a­tion of real­istic 3D-prin­ted Breast Can­cer Meta­stasis Mod­els.

The pro­ject is focused on the devel­op­ment of 3D real­istic breast can­cer dis­ease mod­els. Within this pro­ject, the pro­posed PhD research will focus on lung and bone mar­row organ­o­typic mod­els as meta­static niches, to mon­itor dis­ease pro­gres­sion and treat­ment. The long-term vis­ion is to use such mod­els for per­son­al­ized medi­cine using can­cer cells derived from indi­vidual patients.

For this pur­pose, new approaches will be developed based on the com­bin­a­tion of the exper­i­ence of the two groups involved: the expert­ise of Dr. Dor­leta Jime­nez de Aber­asturi in the design and char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of 3D-prin­ted cell mod­els; and the expert­ise of Dr. Cipitria in bio­ma­ter­i­als, regen­er­a­tion, breast can­cer and bone meta­stasis. The pro­ject is highly mul­tidiscip­lin­ary and com­bines research involving mater­i­als sci­ence, cell bio­logy, in vitro dis­ease mod­els and bioima­ging.

Requirements:

Required Edu­ca­tion Level:

A Mas­ter degree in a rel­ev­ant area of Bio­tech­no­logy, Bio­logy/Bio­chem­istry, Chem­istry, Bio­med­ical Engin­eer­ing, Mater­i­als Sci­ence or related areas is required. Exper­i­ence in the fields of 3D print­ing and cell cul­ture is highly desir­able. Can­did­ates that are in the pro­cess of their Mas­ter thesis defense in the next 3 months will also be con­sidered.

Required Skills/Qual­i­fic­a­tions:

The can­did­ates are expec­ted to have interest in mul­tidiscip­lin­ary work, motiv­a­tion to learn from a diversity of sci­entific areas and the capa­city to work in an inter­na­tional envir­on­ment. Good inter­per­sonal skills as well as writ­ten and oral com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in Eng­lish are required.

Dur­a­tion:

Pre­doc­toral con­tract with a dur­a­tion of 3 years. The can­did­ate will be con­trac­ted by CIC bio­ma­GUNE for the first 18 months, and by IIS Biod­ono­s­tia for the last 18 months.
