Leib­niz-Insti­tut für Agrar­tech­nik und Bio­öko­no­mie e.V. (ATB)

The Leib­niz Insti­tute for Agri­cul­tural Engin­eer­ing and Bioeconomy is a pion­eer and a driver of bioeconomy research. We cre­ate the sci­entific found­a­tion to trans­form agri­cul­tural, food, indus­trial and energy sys­tems into a com­pre­hens­ive bio-based cir­cu­lar eco­nomy. We develop and integ­rate tech­niques, pro­cesses and man­age­ment strategies, effect­ively con­ver­ging tech­no­lo­gies to intel­li­gently cross­link highly diverse bioeco­nomic pro­duc­tion sys­tems and to con­trol them in a know­ledge-based, adapt­ive and largely auto­mated man­ner. We con­duct research in dia­logue with soci­ety - know­ledge-motiv­ated and applic­a­tion-inspired.

ATB is coordin­ator of the Hori­zon Europe pro­ject Mar­ginUp! - Rais­ing the bio-based indus­trial feed­stock capa­city of Mar­ginal Lands, an innov­a­tion action within the topic: Innov­at­ing sus­tain­able bio-based sys­tems and the bioeconomy - Mar­ginal lands and cli­mate-resi­li­ent and biod­iversity-friendly crops for sus­tain­able indus­trial feed­stocks and related value chains (HORI­ZON-CL6-2022-Cir­cBio-01-02). The Mar­ginUp! pro­ject pro­poses a strategy to secure use and return prof­it­ab­il­ity on mar­ginal lands. Its main object­ive is to intro­duce cli­mate-resi­li­ent and biod­iversity-friendly non-food crops for sus­tain­able indus­trial feed­stock in mar­gin­al­ised and low-pro­ductiv­ity lands. The pro­ject will focus on pro­du­cing bio­mass to be used as raw mater­ial for the pro­duc­tion of bioproducts and bio­fuels, which in turn, will cre­ate a sus­tain­able and cir­cu­lar value chain, increas­ing the farm­ing sys­tem resi­li­ence in rural areas. To fur­ther enhance the biod­iversity bene­fi­cial impact, Mar­ginUp! is focus­ing on under­stand­ing which mar­ginal lands are suit­able for low ILUC bio­mass pro­duc­tion. The know­ledge gathered in this pro­ject will be put into prac­tice in five dif­fer­ent use cases loc­ated in five dif­fer­ent regions across Europe. Moreover, inter­na­tional cooper­a­tion has been con­sidered and exam­in­a­tion and iden­ti­fic­a­tion of mar­ginal lands will extend to non-European coun­tries. To ensure the suc­cess of the pro­ject, Mar­ginUp! will have a rep­lic­a­tion net­work to address the needs and require­ments of rel­ev­ant stake­hold­ers, includ­ing, poli­cy­makers, land man­agers, farm­ers, the bio-based industry, envir­on­mental author­it­ies, the aca­demia and the civil soci­ety.

Working field:

  • Coordin­at­ing and man­aging the pro­ject and part­ners’ activ­it­ies as a mem­ber of the pro­ject coordin­a­tion team
  • Organ­iz­ing, presid­ing, mod­er­at­ing and doc­u­ment­ing pro­ject and research activ­it­ies, meet­ings, work­shops and con­fer­ences
  • Mon­it­or­ing and eval­u­at­ing pro­ject activ­it­ies and com­pli­ance by the part­ners
  • Fol­low­ing-up and adapt­ing the plan­ning and exe­cu­tion of work pack­ages
  • Ini­ti­at­ing and con­trib­ut­ing to research activ­it­ies related to the techno-eco­nomic, socio-tech­nical and socio-eco­lo­gical ana­lysis of integ­rated sys­tems

  • Col­lect­ing, review­ing to verify con­sist­ency and sub­mit­ting reports, other deliv­er­ables and spe­cific reques­ted doc­u­ments to the fund­ing author­ity
  • Col­lab­or­at­ing in the design and imple­ment­a­tion of courses as well as super­vi­sion of gradu­ation theses at the uni­versity

Requirements:

  • Great interest in innov­a­tion stud­ies, busi­ness man­age­ment and rural devel­op­ment
  • Excel­lent pro­ject man­age­ment skills
  • Excel­lent uni­versity degree or doc­tor­ate in social sci­ences, human­it­ies, polit­ical sci­ences, agri­cul­tural sci­ences, envir­on­mental sci­ences, eco­nom­ics or other sub­ject area related to the pro­ject
  • Sci­entific expert­ise and abil­ity to con­cep­tu­al­ize and ini­ti­ate empir­ical ana­lyses based on sound the­or­et­ical reas­on­ing prefer­ably demon­strated in one or more fields of activ­ity rel­ev­ant to the pro­ject
  • Rel­ev­ant exper­i­ence with quant­it­at­ive, qual­it­at­ive and inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research meth­ods
  • Excel­lent Eng­lish oral and writ­ing skills
  • Good inter­cul­tural com­mu­nic­a­tion, detail ori­ented and team­work skills
